Vunivutu villagers in Macuata will now have a safe place to take refuge during a natural disaster after Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama commissioned the new Vunivutu Village Evacuation Centre.
The evacuation centre is funded through the Office of the Prime Minister under the Small Grants Scheme at a total cost of $46,538.64.
It was damaged during Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2020 and repair works had begun by the villagers, however, a request was made to the Prime Minister during his official visit last year, for the project to be undertaken by the RFMF Engineers.
Villager, Ranadi Ni Cevaraluna thanked Bainimarama for his visionary leadership and for hearing the plea of the villagers in their time of need.
She says the project will now shelter 58 households in Vunivutu Village during a natural disaster.
Cevaraluna adds the opening of their new centre is not a celebration of having a new structure but its about their lives being taken cared for.
