The people of Nausori were filled with joy as their new market and bus stand was opened by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday.
The new market replaces the old market which has stood since 1938.
The Nausori Town Council had signed a $6 million loan offer from the Fiji Development Bank for this project.
This was in addition to the $3 million that was contributed by government.
The new market has over 1,800 stalls, 16 small shops and three restaurants and also has a special section to sell fish while crops and vegetables will be sold in two separate sections.
The new bus stand which has been constructed next to the new market has four main terminals and 26 bus bays.
It has also been financially modelled to ensure that there will not be any drastic increase in fees for market vendors in the future.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said many who will use the bus station as a transit point to Suva can now do so with much greater convenience and comfort.
Meanwhile, more than 80 people from Rewa, Tailevu and Naitasiri welcomed the opening of the new market and bus stand by performing a traditional Meke.
The Meke was a symbol of a new beginning for Nausori town and was also evidence to the comments made the Prime Minister that any suggestion that I’Taukei customs are threatened is a lie.
