More than 600 mangrove seedlings were planted by the youths of Navuniivi village in Ra as they take action against climate change in their communities.
Minister for Youth and Sports Parveen Bala who took part in the planting of mangroves stressed that the planting of the mangrove seedlings will mitigate the impact of climate change in their community.
He says the Ministry is committed to encouraging Fijian youths to take action against climate change and they have set-up a new program called the Youth Coast Care program.
Bala says this program promotes the re-vegetation of coastal areas to protect the receding shoreline, create a nursery for marine life, increase fish numbers and encourage the sustainable use of our marine resources for the future generations.
He adds that the Ministry commends the foresight of the village in mangrove reforestation and the active participation of youths in such initiatives.
The Minister’s visit to Navuniivi was a follow-up visit following an earlier commitment to the villagers to assist in climate change activities such as mangrove planting.
