The Nausori Town Council is having discussions with the Land Transport Authority and the Fiji Roads Authority to establish a temporary taxi base on N.G Patel Street while the Council is trying to find a permanent base for taxi drivers.
Taxi drivers that were based next to the old Nausori Bus Stand were fenced off from their taxi bases last week by construction workers.
Council CEO, Deo Narayan says construction workers have placed containers of building material and equipment on the site of the taxi base.
Narayan had informed the taxi drivers that they can utilize the Main Street as a taxi base despite the yellow markings on the road that indicates that it is a no parking zone.
He says the land on which the taxi base was located was not owned by the Nausori Town Council and the landowners could have taken the land back any time.
He says the council had a mutual understanding with the landowners after the expiry of the lease.
Narayan adds that the Council is still having discussions with relevant stakeholders to find a permanent base for the taxi drivers.
