The Nausori Town Council is now awaiting the clearance from the National Occupational Health & Safety Services for the dismantling of the old Nausori market structure.
The Council says that because of the health risks associated with the asbestos in the old market, they have to liaise with relevant authorities before it is removed.
The council workers have undergone the necessary training but the OHS officials will have to be at the site when asbestos is removed from the old market site.
No time-frame has been given as to when the site will be cleared for major development work to start.
A $40 million worth complex by Shop and Save Limited will be built at the site.
The complex will have hotel apartments, a cinema, conference rooms, supermarkets and 350 parking spaces.
Local Government Minister, Praveen Bala told us earlier this year that construction work will start in the first quarter of this year.
