The National Minimum Wage Rate has been approved at $2 per hour by the Cabinet in it's sitting yesterday.
The National Minimum Wage Rate is expected to come into effect in March however Minister for Labour, Jone Usamate said a date is yet to be confirmed.
Usamate said this major wage policy of Government is designed to alleviate poverty among marginalized workers in the informal sector and those in the formal sectors that are not covered under the current ten Wages Regulation orders.
He added that this is a milestone achievement in the history of Fiji.
Usamate said the Ministry of Labour worked in partnership with consultant Dr Mahendra Reddy and conducted a four month comprehensive and representative survey throughout Fiji amongst twelve sectors last year.
He said after the survey Dr Reddy had recommended an initial proposal at $2.32 per hour however following issues raised by Small and Medium Enterprises a review was carried out and the National Minimum wage rate was proposed $2 per hour.
