More than 40 households in Nasilai village in Tailevu gathered at their village hall yesterday to welcome a delegation from the Fiji Girmit Foundation of New Zealand.
The Turaga Daunakelo, Vanavasa Vono was emotional while receiving the tabua, sevusevu and thanksgiving plaque from the delegation.
Vono says the village did not expect this and their presence was highly appreciated by the villagers.
This is after the ancestors of these villagers provided valuable assistance in the rescue operations which helped in saving 438 lives after the sinking of the ship, Syria on the Nasilai reef on May 11th 1884.
Foundation Secretary Thakur Ranjit Singh says without their valuable and timely help and the traditional i‑Taukei culture and compassion, the loss of lives would have been much higher.
The Fiji Girmit Foundation New Zealand will also visit the Lautoka Girmit Centre today.
