Consultation in Nabua last night

A concerned resident of Nabua is questioning the Government on how the review of the opening hours of nightclubs can stop youths from taking part in house parties if the hours are reduced.

The resident who wants to remain anonymous while speaking at the consultation held at Nabua Secondary School, says if nightclub hours are reduced, people will still find ways where they can drink alcohol such as going to house parties.

The resident says he was talking to some police officers who told him that their teams are stretched.

He then raised the question on how the Police will control house parties, if people finish drinking from the clubs and manage to find a home to party.

He says the Government should also consider that the current operating hours of nightclubs are also assisting families, such as those that work as bouncers, waiters in nightclubs and also those that sell food on the roadside.

The Nabua resident is suggesting that alcohol sales in nightclubs can be from 5pm to 1am, and nightclubs can continue to open until the last person leaves the club.

Another resident, Asesela Ravudi, suggested that nightclubs be open from 3pm to 11pm because buses and taxis are still in full operation.

Ravudi says nowadays, private taxis are becoming dangerous, especially for women.

He also gave the example of the girl that was allegedly raped by three men after returning from the nightclub.

Matelita Tiko, who resides at Mead Road Housing, says that nightclubs should open from 5pm to 1pm during the weekdays and from 5pm to 11pm on Saturdays.

She says Sundays should be respected, but nowadays, people are drunk, and sometimes, brawls also occur on Sundays.

Tiko says Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka had done it before where Sunday was left alone, and no work was done on Sunday.
