Good news for rugby fans as New Zealand Rugby has awarded a conditional license to the Fijian Drua to feature in the Super Rugby from next year.
They will be joined by Moana Pasifika.
The NZ Rugby Board’s decision to approve licences is a major step toward the two Pasifika teams joining NZ Rugby’s existing five Super Rugby Aotearoa clubs and Rugby Australia’s five Super Rugby teams in a new tournament being planned for 2022 and is conditional on their final business plans and Rugby Australia’s support.
The Fiji Rugby Union says although still subject to finalization of private capital funding, they are in advanced stages of discussions and remain confident that it will finalize funding in the coming weeks.
They say the Drua’s operations will be conducted through a separate company, which will be majority owned by private investors, although it will work closely with FRU in many areas.
FRU CEO, John O’Connor says they are grateful to NZ Rugby who have championed Fiji’s inclusion in the Super Rugby competition.
O’Connor says the Drua will play a minimum of five matches in Fiji .
