The National Federation Party has today paid tribute to the Girmitiyas whose blood, sweat, toil, tears as well as co-operation and racial harmony with the indigenous Fijians and other minority races have made Fiji the hub of the South Pacific.
NFP Leader Professor Biman Prasad says that Girmitiyas that chose to make Fiji their home had contributed to the social, economic, and political advancement in Fiji especially to the Sugarcane Industry which was the economic backbone of the country for more than 100 years.
He says the founding of schools, building of temples, preservation of languages, culture and tradition was a hallmark of the principals of self dignity and respect instilled by the Girmitiya in their descendants which are passed onto from one generation to another.
Prasad says the current generation should cherish and uphold these teachings which can be passed onto the future generations by educating them about the struggles and sacrifices the Girmitiyas did for justice and dignity.
