The National Federation Party is calling on the government to remove the 20 cents per litre extra duty on fuel which was imposed from April last year.
Party Leader Professor Biman Prasad says the extra fuel duty is severely hurting the people with the escalating price of fuel.
Prasad says the Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum justified the imposition of the duty in March last year by saying the fuel prices were at their lowest due to dramatic reductions in world fuel price.
The NFP Leader says we have had about three successive increases in fuel prices and it is only fair that the 20 cents per litre extra duty is removed.
Prasad adds it is the duty of any government to pass on the benefits of any price reduction to the people but the government has extracted extra revenue by imposing duty on low fuel prices for 10 months now.
We have sent questions to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission. They are yet to respond.
