Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has clarified that his recent trip to the United States, criticized by some, was entirely funded by a son of Lau, with no government expenditure involved.
Rabuka revealed this while officiating at the Lau Provincial Council Meeting in Suva.
He says the same financial support was provided for the GCC Review Committee, highlighting the importance of the Great Council of Chiefs in the iTaukei structure.
Rabuka also says the upcoming budget might not satisfy everyone, but it will well serve its purpose in fostering national cohesion and resilience.
He mentioned there will be new programs that will be introduced in the upcoming budget and expressed gratitude to the nations that consider Fiji a friend, reaffirming the country's commitment to strengthening international relationships.
Rabuka also mentioned the ongoing consultation being held by the appointed GCC Review Committee and assured attendees that the views expressed during the meeting in Bau would be considered, with some issues addressed in the upcoming budget announcement this Friday.
Rabuka applauded the contribution of Fiji's security forces in global peacekeeping missions and the sacrifices made by both service members and their families. While delivering his speech, Rabuka also acknowledged the presence of Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara and thanked him for answering the province's call and honoring the legacy of his father, the late statesman Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.
Rabuka says the role of iTaukei leadership in provincial governance is significant, noting that while democracy may not align with traditional iTaukei structures in some areas, it can foster unity, encourage dialogue, and promote respect for diverse perspectives.
He also expressed his appreciation to the province of Lau for their commitment to marine conservation by declaring 8.26 percent of its ocean as a marine protected area.
Rabuka also mentioned the crucial role played by Fijians living overseas in supporting their families through remittances saying their contribution amounted to upto $1 billion last year.
Prime Minister Rabuka expressed his gratitude to the Lau Province for their contributions and highlighted the significance of their involvement in shaping Fiji's future.
