The Leader of the SODELPA Youth Council, Peter Waqavonovono says he is not making comments as a SODELPA representative when he publicly said that he and a group of people will disrespect the new Fijian flag.
In an interview on Radio NZ, Waqavonovono said he will reject the new flag, even going to the extent of removing the flag at any of the activities.
Waqavonovono says they do not mind going to jail.
When questioned on the issue by Fijivillage, Waqavonovono says the rejection is his own reaction on behalf of his group and not the opinion of SODELPA.
He says they will not mind disrespecting the flag even if it is passed by parliament.
FIjivillage also questioned Waqavonovono what he thinks of the whole process going through parliament as that is seen as parliamentary democracy. Waqavonovono believes that is not democracy although the process will go through the parliamentary process.
He says he also sees nothing wrong in disrespecting the new flag although it is expected to be an offence under the proposed National Flag Protection law.
Waqavonovono says they want a referendum on the flag.
Meanwhile Police Chief Of Operations, ACP Rusiate Tudravu says they are looking into the issue.
Waqavonovono will present the SODELPA Youth Council’s submission to the Parliamentary Standing Committee tomorrow.
