Minister for Education, Rosy Akbar says her Ministry has found that more students from the foundation level have secured toppers scholarship in the previous years.
While speaking at the prize-giving ceremony at Yat Sen Secondary School, Akbar says as announced by the Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum in the 2019/2020 National Budget, foundation students' will not be given the toppers scholarship from next year and will only be available for Year 13 students.
Akbar urged the 30 Year 13 graduates of Yat Sen Secondary School to do their level best in the upcoming external exams to be eligible to apply for the Toppers Scholarship.
She says the government has assisted 28,905 students through the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme to date.
The Minister for Education told the 318 students of Yat Sen Secondary School that the government has allocated $181 million for TELS scheme, 950 toppers scholarship for local students and 20 overseas toppers scholarship in this financial year.
Akbar told the year 13 graduates to choose a career where they can easily get a job.
She says the Ministry of Education lacks teachers in subjects such as science, industrial arts, maths, and physics.
