The multi‑agency team deployed by the government to Qamea Island following the landslides on the island has begun work to support early recovery efforts on the island.
Permanent Secretary for National Disaster Management, Meleti Bainimarama said that the overall functions of the team include detailed assessments, provision of relief and early recovery support, repairs and clearance of debris and psycho‑social support for cases of trauma.
He says Dreketi Village was the worst affected by the landslides and the team carried out verification exercises on the ground upon arrival and has prioritized needs in water, health, sanitation, hygiene, food security and education.
