Motorists are being stopped from turning up Stewart Street which is one of the busiest streets in the heart of Suva City as Police are redirecting traffic due to the Methodist Church Conference that is currently underway at Centenary Church.
Questions have been raised on why this is being done as it is adding on the traffic in the capital city and the conference is taking place inside the church.
Police have confirmed that the temporary rediversion of traffic is being overseen by their traffic officers adding that four traffic officers have been deployed and are along Stewart Street to control and redirect traffic specifically for the purpose of the safety of the general public.
Police add that this is being overseen by the Divisional Traffic Officer and the Traffic Officer Totogo who have been working closely with the church officials.
They say that this same strategy has worked for the Nasinu and Hibiscus festivals and with the high number of vehicles and foot traffic along Stewart Street, their main concern is safety.
When questioned by Fijivillage News on the number of vehicles parked illegally in no parking areas and on the footpath along Saint Fort Street, Police say that no one has raised the matter with them or any of the traffic officers at the scene however, they will be patrolling city areas.
On any other day, cars parked in these areas are booked.
We have contacted the Suva City Council and they have stressed that motorists who park on footpaths or are found to be parking illegally around Suva City will be booked immediately.
When contacted by Fijivillage, the Suva City Council says that they are sending teams to book those found parking illegally and those parking along footpaths.
The Council adds that they have also contacted police to assist them with the booking of those motorists who are disregarding road rules.
