In an effort to help their children identify the effects and to fight drug abuse, some concerned mothers have come together and formed a group called Fiji’s Ministry of Mums (MOM).
Founder of this MOM’s group Ellana Kalounisiga says she is a mother that wants to get other mums fight off dealers that are trying to lure their children into selling their products in schools.
Kalounisiga says this needs a collaborative approach.
Kalounisiga says she has done drug awareness in various schools and some students have shared that drug abuse is happening in their homes.
Kalounisiga says her biggest goal in forming this group is to start a centre in the heart of Suva where students can come and spend time in rather than leaving them looking for illegal things to engage in.
She says that they have been in consultation with government in trying to get this space.
She says Fiji should also have a proper rehabilitation centre.
While speaking at their first meeting today at Thurston Garden in Suva, Volatabu Group CEO Kalesi Volatabu says they know that some of the children are been approached in schools to sell drugs.
