More that 550 people suffering from Diabetic Retinopathy have come to the Pacific Eye Institute this year, and there are serious concerns that many people are losing their sight due to Diabetes.
Institute’s Pacific Programme Manager Kirti Prasad says they have registered more than 10,000 cases since 2012.
They have been seeing about 2,000 people on average every year.
Prasad is urging people to get their eyes checked at an early stage of their Diabetes diagnosis so that the disease can be identified earlier and treated.
She has also revealed that there are people who are living in denial and believe that they will be fine if they are able to control their diet and medication.
Prasad says along with following their diet and taking medications, they need to get their eyesight checked at least once annually.
