More than 1,000 people are part of a nationwide “Clean Up Fiji Campaign” today in an effort to control the dengue outbreak.
A member of the Clean Up Fiji Campaign Elia Lawena said there are about 500 participants that turned up for the cleanup campaign in Suva alone.
He said government officials including PSC, the Correction Services, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Fiji Police Force, government departments and faith based organization along with other groups are helping in the initiative.
Lawena said they are mainly focusing on cleaning those areas that were affected by the recent flooding and those areas that have recorded the most numbers of dengue cases.
The group is also offering to clean up the compounds of members of the public within their cleanup areas.
Lawena said last week’s cleanup campaign was a success one where they collected about 30 tonnes of waste from within Suva including about 500 tyres.
He said the 500 tyres are still at the Municipal Yard which will be cut into pieces before taken to the dump.
The cleanup campaign will continue for the next two Saturdays and will end on the 29th of this month.
Meanwhile, there have been 12 confirmed deaths due to dengue fever so far and 11,359 confirmed clinical cases have been recorded.
