The government's objective over the next three years is to build more classrooms and schools along the Navua to Nausori corridor due to population growth in urban areas.
This has been highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad during fijivillage Straight Talk with Vijay Narayan where he was asked about what is his plan in the education sector where concerns have been raised about the curriculum from pre-school to tertiary levels.
Professor Prasad says the staff-student ratio is a big challenge that the majority of the teachers in urban areas are facing right now.
He says there are 873 early childhood institutions, 738 primary schools and 176 secondary schools in Fiji, of which only 13 schools are owned by the government, while the rest are schools are owned by faith-based organisations.
He further says putting children in a school is one thing, but making sure that they get quality education is another matter and that can only happen by having quality teachers graduate from various institutions.
