Ministry stands by decision to expel SGS student
Suva Grammar School

The Education Ministry is standing by the leadership of Suva Grammar School despite concerns about a student being expelled last week without any warnings being given to the parents.

According to the school, the student was sent home because he was constantly late and would skip classes.

In response to questions by Fijivillage, Education Minister Doctor Mahendra Reddy says the school is raising their standard under a new leadership and they have the Ministry’s total support.

Reddy says they are doing this for the betterment of the students and this is the time to set discipline.

The Minister has made it clear that they cannot tolerate students who are habitually late.

Reddy stresses that all students should be in school by 8am.

He says they can understand if students are late one or two days a week but not every day.

When asked about teachers having the authority to send students home, Reddy says teachers are not allowed to send students home or give them detention if they are late to school.

He says there are procedures that need to be followed and the parents need to be called in and given an explanation.
