In a bid to sustain the reduction in road fatalities, the Ministry of Transportation has implemented a few initiatives and a multi-faceted approach that encompasses both enforcement and road safety education.
Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau says these key initiatives include the review and streamlining of driver licence issuance, introduction of Provisional Licenses (P1 and P2) to help new drivers gain valuable experience under controlled conditions, review of the Defensive Driving Course (DDC) curriculum to effectively promote safe driving practices among all driver licence holders.
Ro Filipe says as part of their commitment to road safety, they are also looking at introducing a mandatory Defensive Driving Course for holders of Class 2 full drivers' licences.
This requirement aims to ensure that experienced drivers continue to adhere to safe driving standards.
He says the introduction of a demerit points system and tougher penalties is also expected to deter traffic violations and curb irresponsible driving behaviours.
He adds that a review of the criteria for obtaining a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) driver's licence would also be considered to ensure that drivers of commercial vehicles meet stringent safety and competence standards.
The Minister further says a rewards system such as Gold Card services would provide better support and recognition for drivers who consistently demonstrate safe driving practices and says this initiative aims to reward and incentivise good driving behaviour.
