Minister for Environment, Doctor Mahendra Reddy says following the successful phase out of the chlorofluorocarbons in 2003, the Ministry is now working towards a complete phase out of the hydrofluorocarbons by 2030.
Dr. Reddy highlighted this while responding to a request by Government MP, Alipate Nagata on the progress made with regards to reducing ozone depleting substances.
He says hydrofluorocarbons are utilised for refrigeration in large ships and are worth about a quarter of a million.
Dr. Reddy says they have a target to phase it out by 2030 because they cannot ban it immediately and bring millions of dollars of investments to a standstill.
The Minister adds they are looking at funding from donors to assist them in assisting the industry to replace the use of hydrofluorocarbon.
Dr. Reddy also says the Ministry is working with the Land Transport Authority on dealing with carbon monoxide.
He highlighted this while responding to a question by National Federation Party MP, Lenora Qereqeretabua on when or if the Ministry plans to target school buses that emit a lot of carbon monoxide and various carcinogens and idling Government vehicles with air conditioning running that can be seen along Constitution Avenue.
