Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Agni Deo Singh says improved employer-employee relationships are key to industrial success.

While speaking during a talanoa session with the executives of the Labasa Chamber of Commerce, Singh says improved relations is key to the coalition government since taking office through the review of the employment legislation in ensuring that both employer and workers' rights are well protected.

He says the government believes in working together with employers to ensure business continuity, improved productivity, and sustainable economic growth.

He further says the government is committed to working together with the Labasa Chamber of Commerce as part of its commitment to the Look North Policy.

Singh also reemphasised the ease of doing business for improved business processes and efficiency for a thriving and improved economy.

The President of the Labasa Chamber of Commerce Vinesh Dayal thanked the Fiji government for their support and assistance towards the business houses in Labasa given the number of developments that are currently being underway.

Dayal is also requesting government assistance on other major developments to boost economic activity in the division including training on skills set to meet the current demand as well as healthy competition among the businesses.

Singh in response emphasised the recent developments by the government in terms of skills training which is currently being provided by educational institutions and will include subsidising the apprenticeship scheme as an incentive, including bonding students as part of government policies.

Singh also highlighted the progress on work being undertaken to review the national minimum wage and the sectoral wage rates.

The executives of the Labasa Chamber of Commerce welcomed the review of minimum wages as this will result in increased productivity, more jobs, a satisfied workforce; and improved workplace morale.
