Hundreds of Melanesian descendants are gathered at the Suva foreshore to celebrate the 160th anniversary in remembrance of their ancestors who came to Fiji as labourers, and gave their lives for the development of the nation.
A representative of the Melanesian descendants from the Ra Province, Sera Likuduva says this celebration brings them together to meet other Solomon Islands descendants from different provinces and to acknowledge the sacrifices of their ancestors.
Likuduva says today will be a day to remember, as it will honour the dedication shown by their ancestors.
The 36-year-old says they are proud to call themselves Melanesian, but Fiji will always be their home.
She adds her dream is to visit Maniava, where her ancestors came from.
