Fiji Police Drugs Unit Officer in Charge Assistant Superintendent of Police Anare Masitabua is currently attending the 43rd Meeting of Heads of National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies, Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok.
The meeting brings together leaders and senior officials of national drug authorities to discuss major regional drug trafficking trends and countermeasures.
This meeting was an opportunity for ASP Masitabua to discuss with his counterparts on ways to reduce illicit cultivation and production of drugs, including alternative development.
ASP Masitabua says an important takeaway from the meeting was learning the new method in trafficking and trends in concealment methods and transport, and effective investigative techniques.
He says the illicit drug trade is a multifaceted industry and they have also look at countering money-laundering, illicit financial flows in relation to the drug trade.
He adds rehabilitation is an effective means of reducing the chances of recidivism and the meeting gave them the platform to discuss alternatives ways of conviction or punishment for drug-related offences.
