Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar says there are some market vendors that have about thirty stalls and have started to operate distribution centres, distributing other items to supermarkets.
Kumar says markets are for fresh produce and is not a distribution centre.
She says they have seen how markets operate and in the meantime, they are preparing a market regulation with the help of UN Women.
Kumar adds the regulation will create a level playing field.
The Minister further says they also want to create a policy that can be applied to all markets across Fiji.
Kumar adds that at the moment, an individual markets have their own by-laws and they want to make it more consistent.
