Marist Brothers High School has now taken the lead in the Fijivillage Medal Tally of the boys division in the 2011 Coca Cola Games.

Marist leads the tally with 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze.

Queen Victoria School and Ba Provincial Secondary are in second place with 1 gold and 1 silver while Xavier College from Ba is next with 1 gold and 1 bronze.

In the girls division, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School leads the medal tally with 2 gold while Nadroga Arya College and Nadarivatu Secondary are tied at second place with one gold medal each.

The medals continue to scatter in the field events.

A number of medals have gone to the rural based schools which also show the raw talent in the rural areas.

Marist’s first gold medal has come from the field and hopes are high in the Red Fire camp that the school from Flagstaff will extend their lead further with a number of gold medal prospects taking part in the medal races later this afternoon.

Last year's champion, Varasiko Tomeru of Marist Brothers High School came in fourth.

Josese Rabesa of Dreketi High School also caused a big upset in the 1,500 metres Junior Boys event, winning gold for his school.

In the girls Open 1,500 metres event, Nadarivatu Secondary School's Mereseini Naidau won gold while Adi Cakobau School's Akesa Drotini and Suva Grammar School's Nohela Taqai were unplaced.

The 200 metres heats have been completed and Marist's Banuve Tabakaucoro recorded the fastest time.

His time was 21.8 seconds.

Mataiasi Savou has also qualified from the 200 metres heats.

Suva Grammar School's Lepani Naivalu came second in his heat.

He was beaten by Nadi College's Epeli Kavarua, however both are through to the 200 metres finals.

The 4x400 metres heats is currently underway.

The 100 metres heats kick off at 5pm today.

An interesting point to note here, Banuve Tabakaucoro of Marist who has the fastest time will run in the same 100 metres heat as defending champion, Mataiasi Savou of LDS College.

The 100 metres finals will start at 7.25pm tonight.
