Many landlords in the country seem to be unaware of the landlord and tenant laws that are in place.
Consumer Council of Fiji CEO, Premila Kumar said that one such popular breach is that landlords do not give one month’s written notice to tenants to vacate their premises.
She said that many times landlords do not issue receipts to their tenants for the bond and rent money paid.
Kumar said that when handling such cases, the Council liaises with both the parties to try and reach a solution and unsuccessful cases are referred to the Small Claims Tribunal.
The Council has received 64 complaints for Landlord/Tenancy issues for the first three months this year out of which 36 matters have been resolved so far.
