A 41-year-old man will spend over 10 years behind bars for raping a 17-year-old student in Nasinu in 2013.

The court was told that the girl’s parents got separated when she was 10 years old.

She was living with her father and the step mother for some time but in 2011 the girl moved with her mother to the man’s house as she had some problems with her step mother.

High Court Judge, Justice Vinsent Perera noted that the 41-year-old man is the girl’s mother’s defacto husband.

Justice Perera said the man caught the girl smoking in the bathroom and to keep her secret he asked her to have sex with him.

However, the girl complained to her teacher one morning when the man dropped her to school and told her not to come home until she makes up her mind to have sex with him.

Justice Perera has imposed a non-parole period of eight years, 10 months and 18 days.
