A man has been sentenced to 2 years, 6 months and 15 days imprisonment for stabbing his partner repeatedly in the back with a pair of scissors in the full view of their children in Ra in September last year.
The man pleaded guilty to a charge of act with the intent to cause grievous harm.
On 30th September, last year, the man went to his farm in the morning and when he came home at around lunch time, he was frustrated to find that his partner has not prepared anything for lunch.
According to court documents, the man told his partner to go to the shop and buy tinned fish and prepare lunch however, she went to the shop and did not return until around 7pm.
The man was angry and after asking, the partner told him that she was visiting her family members who lived around the area and when the man heard this, he asked her why she spent time at her relative’s home instead of coming back to prepare his lunch.
During his conversation, the woman was at the fireplace cooking and out of anger and frustration, the man started swearing at his partner and in his state of anger, he picked up a pair of scissors and stabbed the woman three times in the back.
While sentencing the man, Lautoka High Court Judge, Justice Sunil Sharma says a domestic violence witnessed by the children sends a wrong signal for the future of a family which could have been avoided had both parties exercised mature judgement towards each other.
He also recommended that the Commissioner of Corrections Service facilitate an anger management course for the man.
The man can apply for parole after serving 2 years in prison.
