A 22‑year‑old man has been jailed for 3 years and 9 months by the Labasa High Court for attempting to rape his aunt last year.
The man attempted to rape the woman when she was returning home on 2nd December last year.
He pulled the aunt’s hand which caused her to fall to the ground.
It was heard in court that the woman then managed to bite the man’s hand and scream for help.
The 50‑year‑old woman got injuries on her face.
In his sentence, High Court Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe said sexual exploitation of women by the people known to them is one of the worst forms of crimes.
Justice Rajasinghe said it not only invades the physical freedom and autonomy of the victim but also causes severe psychological traumas in the mind of the victim.
A non‑parole period of 1 year and 9 months has been set.
