A 36-year-old man who raped, sexually and indecently assaulted his 12-year-old stepdaughter in Lautoka in July last year has been sentenced to 13 years and 1-month imprisonment.
The man was charged with 2 counts of rape, 3 counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault.
While sentencing the man, Judge, Justice Sunil Sharma says this is yet again another sad case of a child becoming a victim of a matured adult from within the same household.
Justice Sharma says when an accused sexually abuses a child, he should not expect any leniency but condign punishment from the court to mark the society’s outrage and denunciation against such conduct.
He says the courts in this country have time and again expressed its revulsion by handing down long term imprisonment sentences but still people are not paying any heed.
A non-parole period of 11 years has been set.
