A 25-year-old man from Caubati charged with burglary and theft will be produced in the Rakiraki Magistrates Court today.

Police say it is alleged the man stole a vehicle from Nawanawa Road in Nadera on Sunday night and was involved in an accident near Malake Landing in Rakiraki Monday morning.

It is alleged he ran away from the scene of the accident where the stolen car had veered off the road, and broke into a 55 year old woman’s house and stole assorted items.

Efforts by villagers from Malake Island led to the arrest of the man after the victim raised the alarm.

The men from Malake Island who were near the landing chased after the suspect into a sugar cane field when Police officers who were conducting community visitations nearby arrived.

The suspect was arrested by the men after a search through the cane fields all items alleged to have been stolen were recovered.
