A 31-year-old unemployed man from Kinoya has been arrested for the unlawful possession of illicit drugs after arriving on a shipping vessel from a maritime island.
Police say their team, based at the jetty searched passengers yesterday and found a man with a blue bag containing four parcels of dried leaves wrapped in clear plastic, believed to be marijuana.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu says the team also found seven clear zip-lock plastic bags, 44 zip-lock plastic bags, and 572 branches of dried leaves believed to be marijuana wrapped in a black sulu.
ACP Driu adds that the parcel was unclaimed and assures that their search of shipping vessels will continue as part of their ongoing effort to eradicate drugs.
He also mentioned that after receiving information, their team had begun uprooting plants in Lau, Levuka, Gau, and Taveuni.
He adds they are pleased that stakeholders are providing valuable information, which has led to drug seizures and the arrest of suspected individuals.
