Ireland dominated the first half with majority of the possession as Fiji struggled to get their hands on the ball.
However, the 2 time Olympic champions started the second half on a positive note with back to back tries from Vuiviawa Naduvalo and Joseva Talacolo.
With Fiji not able to score the much needed third try, it was Ireland’s Terry Kennedy who scored after the hooter to seal the historic win.
The National 7s side will now face France at 5.06pm in their second match and play Japan at 8.22pm in their final pool match.
The cup quarterfinals will kick off at 4.28pm tomorrow, semis will start at 8.13pm while the final will be played at 11.28pm tomorrow.
