It was littering that caused the sewerage overflow near Sunshine Special School in Lautoka on Wednesday.

Water Authority of Fiji CEO Barry Omundson says a team attended to this sewerage overflow and found that the wastewater line was clogged with rags, bandages and thick tissues.

Omundson says despite their continuous reminders, it is extremely disappointing that irresponsible litterbugs continue to dump rubbish wherever they please.

He says in this case, it was especially appalling as it was affecting students in the nearby school.

Omundson says it needs to be pointed out that the consequences of these actions are not limited to those who commit them and the entire community is impacted as well because lazy and selfish individuals could not be bothered to dispose of their rubbish properly.

He says in fixing these issues, hundreds of thousands of dollars are wasted needlessly, in addition to time and manpower.
