Acting Commissioner of Police Isikeli Ligairi says they are trying their best to equip and educate their officers on how they should deal with members of the community when they are taken into Police stations for questioning.
Ligairi made this comment during the launch of a poster at the Totogo Police Station today titled “Rights of Arrested and Detained Persons”.
This was done in conjunction with the Fiji Human Rights and Anti‑Discrimination Commission and Legal Aid Commission.
The purpose of this exercise is not only for Police officers to know the rights of the members of the community but also for the suspects to know their rights if they are arrested for an offence.
Ligairi says they are starting off with a pilot project and improvements will have to be made in dealing with suspects at all Police stations.
Speaking at the launch, the Director of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti‑Discrimination Commission Ashwin Raj highlighted that they will be conducting training for Police officers in this regard.
He says a poster on all Police stations will go a long way in changing some of the mindsets that they are trying to deal with.
