The Head Boy of Lelean Memorial School has recommended for corporal punishment to be brought back as he wants students’ behaviour in schools to improve.
While speaking at the National Budget Consultations at Vunimono Hall in Nausori today, Tevita Turaganivalu told Attorney General and Minister for Education, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum that the Prime Minister recently made headlines about his concerns regarding students’ behaviour in Fiji.
Turaganivalu told Sayed-Khaiyum that they do not want the corporal punishment that was given 20 years ago but something that is realistic which will improve students’ behavior.
He says students nowadays are exercising their human rights but the rights come with responsibilities.
Students from schools from the Rewa, Naitasiri and Tailevu provinces who were at the consultations also seemed to have backed Turaganivalu’s comments.
Sayed-Khaiyum then asked Lelean’s Head Boy to explain what he exactly means by bringing back corporal punishment.
Turaganivalu then said corporal punishment can come in the form of a slap or a dong just to help students to get disciplined.
He also told Sayed Khaiyum that some teachers cry in school because of the behaviour of students.
He asked the government to help the teachers.
Sayed-Khaiyum says the point of the matter is that we need to be able to look at our values and how we can maintain them.
