Due to Fiji’s national drug crisis and its impact on mental health services, Leadership Fiji 2024 is spearheading a project to support healthcare workers at St. Giles Psychiatric Hospital by constructing a recreational area to promote their mental wellness and well-being.
The initiative, led by cohort team leader Losalini Nalawa, aims to acknowledge and assist the hospital’s staff, who serve some of the most vulnerable members of the nation.
Nalawa told fijivillage News that the project aims to boost healthcare worker's morale by providing a space for relaxation and self-care, with a fundraising cover barrel event set for this Saturday at the Kava Amusement Centre in Nabua.
Nalawa says a QR code is available on the $20 ticket for those interested in learning more about the proposal and its objectives.
Fatty's Shop owner, Nausheem Ali says that after learning about the project, he decided to support it by donating his shop’s Monday pool table earnings, which amounts to around $300 per day.
He estimates that by October, his contributions could total nearly $8,000.
Leadership Fiji is urging individuals and businesses to participate in the event or make donations to ensure the success of the project.
The cohort hopes that by fostering a healthier work environment for St. Giles staff, they can help strengthen mental health services in Fiji.
