The Law Reform Commission is being re-established for the third time and will be fully operational by next year.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted this during the 25th Attorney General's Conference 2023 at Sheraton Resort & Spa in Nadi this morning.

Rabuka says the Attorney General and his team will work efficiently and timely on this while the governing legal practice is also being reviewed, which was recently approved by the government. The Prime Minister says the 2009 promulgation did not allow the legal professionals to speak however he will never do that as lawyers are responsible for being the change agents of the society and to challenge injustices.

Rabuka says lawyers and other professionals related to the field have a part to play in advancing their client's interests.

The Prime Minister says lawyers are the custodians of justice in the virtual world and are responsible for the protection of individuals and must extend a way beyond the courtroom battle and their skills as legal practitioners become invaluable tools in the plight against digital deception.

Rabuka says lawyers must also understand and address challenges on the sensitivity of alarming sexual offences in today’s world especially for those against women, girls and children.

He says he is glad to see Fiji Law Society has also been reconvened and lawyers again have a choice whether to attend either or both of these conferences. Rabuka adds that this conference is more than just a commemoration it is a time to reflect on the revolution of the legal profession and its pivotal role in the development and democracy of Fiji. He says it is also the time for the annual gathering to review the continuing evolution of the legal landscape in Fiji and worldwide.

The conference in the next two days will have important developments such as digital activity and technology because digital connectivity provides unprecedented opportunities for collaboration. He hopes that the conference will come up with these things so that development can take place.
