The Lautoka City Council is planning to install CCTV cameras at the Vunato rubbish dump to deter people from entering the area after allegations were raised that people are burning rubbish.
The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Katamoto Nalumisa highlighted this after handing over 2 new Isuzu brand garbage trucks that cost $870,000 to the Nausori, Savusavu and Tavua Town Council.
Nalumisa says to minimise the ongoing fire that occurring at the Vunato rubbish dump, they have set up a long-term plan of reducing garbage taken to the landfill.
He says the Council is working on segregating the commercial and industrial waste by relocating them to a dedicated area instead of dumping them all together in one landfill.
He adds that by embracing an integrated solid waste management approach, incorporating waste reduction, composting, recycling, reusing and exporting waste to value, waste to energy options to divert or eliminate waste going to these landfills.
The Minister says they are working with ratepayers to enforce how best to segregate their waste before it reaches the Vunato rubbish dump.
