The Fiji Correction Services (FCS) continues its commitment to eradicating illicit drug smuggling in prison facilities, with another significant discovery made early this morning where a plastic bag containing large quantities of marijuana and suki was found during a raid at the Naboro prison farm.
Deputy Commissioner of Corrections, Auta Moceisuva highlighted a concerning trend where smugglers are now dropping drugs at prison farms and other workplaces where inmates are deployed for work.
Moceisuva says that enhanced security protocols within the immediate boundaries of the prisons have forced smugglers to adapt their methods, prompting the FCS to evolve its operational strategies to stay ahead of these attempts.
He says as Fijians move toward the festive season, they anticipate more discoveries of illicit drugs in the coming days.
Moceisuva says their focus remains on maintaining a secure environment within all facilities.
Meanwhile, white powder, marijuana, suki, touch screen mobile phones and mobile batteries was confiscated by the Fiji Corrections Service during a routine sweep search at the Naboro Prison yesterday.
The FCS says they have been inundated with an inflow of huge amounts of contraband being dropped off by unknown individuals in the prison compound.
They say the influx of drugs has forced them to review their security protocols and one of the areas covered involves concealing contraband items with goods brought in during visitation.
As a result of this review, FCS decided to suspend the consumption of cooked food brought in by families and relatives of the prisoners during this festive season.
The FCS has urged the public to support its efforts in preventing the infiltration of drugs into prisons, emphasising the importance of a united front to combat the issue.
