The Minister for Housing and Infrastructure says the new $7 million Laqere Market that will accommodate 400 vendors is expected to commence operation soon.
Parveen Bala was responding to Fiji First Whip Ashneel Sudhakar’s question where he had asked the Minister to update parliament on the current state of the Laqere Market and the benefit it will bring to the people around Nasinu.
Bala says work on the Laqere Market is progressing well, with the main building construction almost 85% done.
He says the general interior fittings, including the car park work are expected to commence next month.
He says apart from 400 vendors, the market comprises of 9 small kiosks and a fish market including disable friendly provisions.
The Minister says their priority will be all the vendors selling on roadsides which is about 250 people.
He says the benefit of the project include much expanded economic activity and the location will also serve as a meeting point for the people of Nasinu to promote their agricultural products.
NFP parliamentarian Parmod Chand asked Parveen Bala if a complete environmental impact assessment report with the extensive consultation process on the new Laqere Market can be tabled in parliament soon.
Bala said it will be done.
