In an attempt to increase revenue, the Labasa Sugar Mill will start their co-generation project soon.
Labasa Sugar Mill’s General Manager, Karia Christopher said the 10 megawatts plant has been installed in the mill to generate power to the power grid throughout the year.
Christopher said they have started this project to expand the revenue earnings to meet the challenges in the years to come, to sustain the operations and to have sustained cane prices.
Christopher highlights they are using the fibre from the cane to run the turbines and generators and produce power in the crushing season.
He added that they will be piling up the fibre to use in the non-crushing season and use the left over from the forests and sawmills if they run out of the fibre.
The 10 megawatts plant is worth of $17 million.
This was made possible through a loan from the Fiji Development Bank.
