The Labasa Golden Age Home is undergoing a $4.7 million face-lift and will be a modern age friendly facility for senior citizens.

Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Sashi Kiran paid a visit to the Golden Age Home in Labasa to assess the renovation works.

Kiran met with executive and carers at the Golden Age Home, Labasa and the residents and carers were delighted to meet her and had discussions on how the new Government can improve its service delivery to the home.

The Golden Age Home was established in the 1960’s providing shelter and care to senior citizens who are sickly, poor and neglected by their families.

The Assistant Minister was informed about the need for support towards disabilities and mental health care, with more than 60 percent of residents falling in that category.

She assured them that the Fiji Government is committed to older persons care and says with the support of the Health Ministry these issues of concern will be looked at urgently.

Kiran says the need to continue as a nation, to embrace the spirit of collaboration for the inclusion, protection, healthy aging and the provision of enabling environments for our elders.

She also says most of these senior citizens are not visited by their families, and encourages families to visit the Home.
