The Land Transport Authority has called on bus operators and Public Service Vehicle drivers to strictly follow priority seating regulations for persons with disabilities, promoting a more inclusive and accessible public transportation system.
LTA Chief Executive Officer, Irimaia Rokosawa emphasised that these regulations are designed to ensure that all public service vehicles whether omnibuses, minibuses, or carriers offer disability-friendly services to the travelling public.
Rokosawa highlighted the importance of complying with the Land Transport PSV Regulations 2000, specifically Regulation 20A, which mandates that priority be given to persons with disabilities and senior citizens.
He adds that in omnibuses, the first two rows of seats are to be reserved for persons with disabilities, while in minibuses and carriers, the seats closest to the driver are to be allocated to them.
Meanwhile, the Spinal Injury Association of Fiji has reiterated its commitment to fighting for better accessibility in transportation and creating a barrier-free environment in Suva for people with disabilities.
Board member and representative Nafitalai Uluinikorotabu stressed that improved access to transportation is crucial for the well-being of all persons living with disabilities.
