A brave 14 year old, Lice Kurisaru of Adi Cakobau School, who had the funeral of her mother and former sprinter, Alena Vadrasamu this week, had a great run in the sub junior girls 100 metres heats today and won in style to qualify for this afternoon’s finals.
Kurisaru kept her composure wearing black arm bands during the race and will compete with Suliana Bai of Suva Grammar School and Charlotte Serevi from MGM who are favourites in the 100 metres final later today.
Lice and Adi Cakobau School will no doubt be remembering Vadrasamu who passed away over the weekend after a long battle with cancer.
Vadrasamu was laid rest to rest yesterday.
Her daughter is also taking part in the 200 metres and 4x100 metres relay events.
The late Vadrasamu was part of the record-breaking 4×100 metres senior girls ACS relay team with Sera Tuinalase, Kelera Tabakaucoro and Alisi Naqiri in the 2008 Coca Cola Games.
The record of 49.14 seconds still stands.
The 100 metres sub junior girls final will be held at 3.55pm today.
