Yat Sen Secondary School's Waisiki Komainaiqoro has won gold in the Senior Boys Long Jump event at the Coca-Cola Games with a jump of 6.86 metres.
The 18-year-old from Nacamake in Koro, who has maternal links to Oneata, Lau, says he began training during Christmas and continued throughout the year to prepare for the competition.
He says the training was tough, involving sprints during the week and jump sessions on the weekends.
He says this is the first medal for Yat Sen and has dedicated the win to his coaches Albert Miller and Bola Tafou, the Laucala Bay Athletics Club, his mother who was watching him today, his father who is currently out at sea, and to God.
Komainaiqoro says he faced tough competition from Xavier but managed to maintain his mental strength throughout.
He now turns his focus to the Senior Boys Triple Jump event tomorrow.
Nacanieli Neisau of Xavier College settled for silver while Kitione Raleqeleqe of Labasa Muslim College took bronze.
