The arrest of a Kiwi rugby player because of reported illegal drug use has led to Japanese rugby's Top League being suspended for the rest of the month.
Former Crusaders, Canterbury and Southland lock Joel Everson who plays for the Hino Red Dolphins was arrested last week for allegedly using cocaine.
The league said it was suspending all of its matches for the rest of March and would use the break to conduct thorough compliance education.
The league's suspension of matches comes when the competition was already withholding its teams from playing to combat the coronavirus outbreak.
The suspension affects a host of Kiwi players with Japanese clubs, including the likes of All Blacks Brodie Retallick and Sam Whitelock, who are on sabbaticals from New Zealand Rugby, and former test stars Dan Carter and Kieran Read.
